The Real Definition of Grit: Where Purpose, Perseverance, and Growth Meet

The word grit has become one of the most popular terms in conversations about success, leadership, and personal development. You hear it in business podcasts, sports interviews, and motivational speeches. Social media celebrates it, highlighting images of early mornings, late nights, and relentless determination.

In today’s hustle culture, grit is often portrayed as the ability to grind harder than everyone else. It’s framed as working longer hours, pushing through exhaustion, and refusing to slow down even as others quit. The underlying message is simple… Want success? Outwork the competition.

Don’t get us wrong. There’s value in effort and discipline. Showing up consistently and doing difficult work remain essential parts of growth. We talk about it all of the time on the Grit Meets Growth podcast. The problem arises when grit becomes reduced to endless hustle. When the conversation focuses only on pushing harder, people begin equating exhaustion with progress. Activity replaces direction, and busyness replaces any kind of meaningful advancement.

This interpretation of grit encourages people to push forward without pausing to ask an important question. What are you actually working toward? Culture’s definition of grit celebrates intensity, yet intensity without clarity often leads to burnout. We stay busy, yet our work drifts away from the deeper goals that give effort meaning. A more thoughtful definition of grit emerged when psychologist Angela Duckworth published her research in the book Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance. Duckworth defines grit as the combination of passion and perseverance directed toward long-term goals. Her research examined why some individuals persist through challenges while others lose momentum when progress slows. What she discovered challenged many traditional assumptions about talent and success. 

Natural ability plays a role, yet it rarely determines long-term outcomes. The individuals who consistently achieve meaningful results are those who remain committed to a goal over extended periods. They maintain interest in their work while continuing to apply effort year after year. Simply put, they play the long game.

This research reframed the concept of grit. Rather than focusing on short bursts of motivation, grit involves sustained dedication. People with high levels of grit maintain focus on a meaningful pursuit even when the excitement of the beginning fades. They continue practicing, learning, and improving long after the early momentum disappears. It’s a concept we’re 100% on board with: doing the seemingly small, important things consistently over and over again.

That perspective moves the conversation beyond hustle culture and closer to something deeper. Grit becomes less about intensity and more about endurance. It reflects a willingness to move forward when progress feels slow and challenges arise along the way.

This gets us closer to a definition of grit we can live with, but from our perspective, even this definition leaves an important layer unexplored. Passion and perseverance matter, yet perseverance alone does not guarantee that someone is moving in the right direction. In any endeavor, knowing what direction you’re going is key. How many of us know people who are gritty and consistent but not locked into a single meaningful direction?

We see it all the time. People demonstrate extraordinary persistence while chasing goals they never fully examined. They work hard, push through setbacks, and endure significant stress in pursuit of achievements that ultimately feel hollow. Effort alone can’t create fulfillment when the destination lacks meaning.

Commitment reflects the moment when someone decides that the pursuit is worth the difficulty it will require, when they decide their purpose is worth the fight.

Discomfort also plays a critical role in the development of grit. Growth rarely occurs within comfortable routines. Progress demands that people move beyond familiar patterns and face uncertainty. Grit involves the willingness to accept that discomfort while continuing to pursue improvement.

Through all of this, consistency may be the most overlooked element of grit. Culture celebrates dramatic effort and heroic moments of discipline, yet most meaningful progress occurs through steady, repeated action. Small steps taken consistently compound into significant progress over time. The boring stuff, the redundant stuff, the “I’m sick of doing this over and over” stuff.

This shows up all over in life. A person who writes a page each day eventually produces a book. A person who trains consistently develops strength that cannot be built through occasional bursts of effort. Eat well daily, track your intake, and your body will change. Consistency transforms effort into momentum.

This quiet side of grit rarely attracts attention. It looks ordinary from the outside. It appears in the daily decision to keep practicing, learning, and improving even when the results remain invisible. It grows through reflection, adjustment, and patience. Over time, though, those small decisions shape identity. Each act of perseverance strengthens the belief that growth is possible. 

Understanding grit through this lens shifts the focus from exhaustion to alignment. The conversation moves away from endless hustle and toward purposeful persistence. Effort becomes connected to meaning, and perseverance becomes a pathway for growth rather than simply a measure of toughness.
